Fam, here at M+M Fitness, we are no chemist. We can’t prescribe you a bunch of meds’ and we can’t tell you what you should and shouldn’t take. But we can give you some pretty good recommendations as far as diet-related supplements go!
We’ve all heard our parents say “get your fruit and veggies in”, but why is it actually necessary? What does a well-balanced meal actually provide us with, and what is the importance of these nutrients?
Well, within a well-balanced diet including fruits and veg, we find vitamins and minerals filled with vital micronutrients! These micronutrients our body cannot synthesize on its own and relies on diet alone to gather them from. Although, a vast majority of us dip in and out of dieting phases, in other words, restricted eating periods, where our meals often can look quite bland. So, it can become virtually impossible to retrieve all of these vital micronutrients from our diet if we’re eating such little amounts of small variety foods! This is where our handy-dandy multivitamins come in clutch!
As a little safety net, we can ensure we’re nourishing our body with those crucial vitamins and minerals it craves when we supplement with these micronutrients. If your finding day-in-day-out you’re eating quite simple meals, with not much colour variety, it can do you the world a good to supplement with these vitamins!
But first, a little definition refresher…
Vitamins are organic substances that are generally classified as either fat soluble or water soluble. Fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K) dissolve in fat and tend to accumulate in the body. Water-soluble vitamins (vitamin C and the B-complex vitamins, such as vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folate) must dissolve in water before they can be absorbed by the body, and therefore cannot be stored. Any water-soluble vitamins unused by the body is primarily lost through urine.
Minerals are inorganic elements present in soil and water, which are absorbed by plants or consumed by animals. While you’re likely familiar with calcium, sodium, and potassium, there is a range of other minerals, including trace minerals (e.g. copper, iodine, and zinc) needed in very small amounts.
Some quick nutrient deficiency facts…
- Just under one in four Australian adults (23%) had a Vitamin D deficiency, which comprised 17% with a mild deficiency, 6% with a moderate deficiency and less than 1% with a severe deficiency.
-
Calcium is the nutrient most likely to be missing from Aussie diets. According to the most recent Australian Health Survey, about three quarters of adult women (73 percent) and half of all men (51 percent) did not meet their calcium requirements based on their intakes from food.
- The NHMS results showed that the Australian population was iodine sufficient in 2011–12, with a population median of 124.0 μg/L. Likewise, 12.8% had a concentration less than 50 μg/L.
It is becoming increasingly more common to be vitamin and mineral deficient, however, we have some incredible supplements here at M+M Fitness that can help restore that inner health balance!
Here are some of our Best-Selling & Top-Rated Products…
- ATP Science ZMAG
Magnesium Citrate: Magnesium is an important mineral needed to regulate other minerals such as vitamin D and calcium, but probably its best-known function would be as a muscle relaxant, thus its inclusion in electrolyte formulas to help with mild cramps, spasms, and tight muscles.
Magnesium bound to a citrate molecule has a role to play in energy production, bone mass and it may help relieve nervous tension.
Zinc Gluconate: Zinc deficiency is one of the most common deficiencies in the Western world which is worrying as zinc is essential in hundreds of enzymatic reactions. It also plays an important role in immune function, which may help fight illnesses.
Organic Selenium: Selenium exists in two forms namely inorganic selenium (selenate and selenite) found in soil and organic selenium (selenomethionine and selenocysteine) found in plants after it has been taken up by the plant root system and converted into the organic form.
ATP Science Z-MAG contains the organic form of selenium important in immune system function.
Taurine: Taurine is considered a semi-essential nutrient because it is abundant in meat and most humans do consume meat. Because of this reason if you do not eat meat regularly you will be lacking in Taurine.
Taurine is needed to keep magnesium inside the cells and calcium outside the cells which are needed for healthy muscle contraction but is also the most abundant amino acid found in leukocytes which forms part of the immune system and is needed to fight illnesses.
